Don't know if this is a good idea or not. There would be plenty of ways for the government to break such a strike, and in the aftermath our independent trucking industry might disappear.
Free trade has not yet run its course. As corporations consolidate and gobble up resources, and as companies like Amazon.com get into the grocery business, transportation costs will become an ever more important part of the finance equation. I'm sure they would just LOVE to crush the trucking industry and replace it with one more to their liking.
