Settlements, Schmettlements

Our Israeli "friends" appear all bent out of shape over the latest UN Security Council resolution:

Did the community organizer from Harvard Law just deliver some personal payback to the IDF commando? So it would seem.

By abstaining on that Security Council resolution declaring Israeli settlements in the West Bank and East Jerusalem illegal and invalid, raged Bibi Netanyahu, President Obama “failed to protect Israel in this gang-up at the UN, and colluded with it.”

Obama’s people, charged Bibi, “initiated this resolution, stood behind it, coordinated on the wording and demanded that it be passed.”

White House aide Ben Rhodes calls the charges “falsehoods.”

Hence, we have an Israeli leader all but castigating an American president as a backstabber and betrayer, while the White House calls Bibi a liar.

This is not an unserious matter.

Here is my take on the issue:

1. If the settlements are illegal under international law, then they are illegal.

2. The temper tantrums of a criminal are irrelevant to the proceedings.

3. No US president or other official is required to support any establishment of religion, such as the nation of Israel or Judaism as a whole. That is what this provision of the US Constitution means:

Article VI, 3: ... no religious Test shall ever be required as a Qualification to any Office or public Trust under the United States.

Dear Israel - Stop your whining and obey the law. Or do you think the Torah/Bible puts you ABOVE the law?

If THAT is what this brouhaha is all about, then in my view this other provision of the US Constitution requires that we not get involved at all, nor support you in any way:

Amendment I
Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof ...

In other words, you do what you want but we're not going to help you or get in your way. You're on your own from now on.

At least until Trump is inaugurated ... because he doesn't understand our constitution, either.

  1. According to this report, it was the UK and not the US which was behind the settlements resolution - http://www.gilad.co.uk/writings/2016/12/27/hot-off-the-press-britain-pulled-the-strings-behind-anti-settlement-resolution

  2. John Kerry appears to agree with me that Israel is NOT a democracy - https://news.grabien.com/story-kerry-israel-can-either-be-jewish-or-democratic-it-cannot-be

That fact should have been obvious to everyone.
